DAVIET CELEBRATED NATIONAL MATHEMATICS DAY ON APRIL 4, 2025 WITH INSPIRING EVENTS SPONSORED BY NCSTC, DST, & PSCST

DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology, Jalandhar, celebrated National Mathematics Day with great fervour and academic spirit. The Research, Innovation, and Consultancy Cell organized the event in association with the Department of Applied Sciences on 4th April 2025 (Friday) in our Institute’s Convention Hall. It was jointly sponsored by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Government of India, and the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST).

Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar (December 22, 1887 – April 26, 1920) was an Indian mathematician. He is considered to be one of the most talented mathematicians in recent history. He had no formal training in mathematics. However, he has made a large contribution to number theory, infinite series and continued fractions.

He was mentored by G. H. Hardy in the early 1910s. After getting his degree at Cambridge, Ramanujan did his own work. He compiled over 3500 identities and equations in his life. Some of the identities were found in his “lost notebook”. When the notebook was discovered, mathematicians proved almost all of Ramanujan’s work. His discoveries have led to many advancements in mathematics. His formulas are now being used in crystallography and string theory. In 2011, Ramanujan’s birthday was made an annual “National Mathematics Day” by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The celebration aimed to honour the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan’s birth anniversary and highlight the importance of mathematics in everyday life and scientific advancement. The event brought together students and scholars to explore mathematics’ beauty, depth, and creativity through engaging competitions and expert talks.

He highlighted how mathematical thinking fosters logical reasoning, precision, and problem-solving, essential for today’s technology-driven world. He underscored its impact on emerging fields like AI, cryptography, and automation, making mathematical proficiency indispensable. Encouraging students to explore its vast applications beyond textbooks, he stressed that embracing mathematical reasoning unlocks limitless opportunities.

Dr. Puneet Pasricha, Assistant Professor in Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, delivered the keynote address. In his enlightening session on the topic “Machine Learning and its Applications in Finance,” Dr. Pasricha introduced the audience to the fundamental concepts of machine learning and explained how mathematical models are at the core of these technologies. He illustrated applying supervised and unsupervised learning techniques in financial forecasting, algorithmic trading, credit risk analysis, and fraud detection. The lecture showcased mathematics’ interdisciplinary power and encouraged students to explore its real-world applications in the digital economy.

The event also featured creative and intellectual competitions such as Mathematical Origami, Mathematical Rangoli, Mathematical Poem Recitation, and a Quiz Competition.

Mr. Kumar Sambhav served as the expert quiz master, conducting a high-energy session that tested and expanded the participants’ knowledge of Mathematical concepts, Science, Geography, History and Entertainment.

Dr. Kanchan L. Singh the Convener of the event, expressed gratitude to the speakers, organizing team, and participants for their contributions. She highlighted the significance of mathematics in scientific advancements and real-world applications. She also acknowledged the support of NCSTC, DST, and PSCST in making the event a success.
